Global Marine Networks (GMN), a Pivotel Company, is the leader in satellite airtime , fast satellite data speeds and services like satellite email , satellite weather forecasts , satellite phone internet , and satellite data optimization Our services include satellite airtime from major satellite carriers like Iridium , Globalstar , Inmarsat , VSAT, and Thuraya. The Spot Satellite Messenger” service, which enables Spot device users to send GPS data on the device’s location, as well as sending text messages, voice communications, or SOS signals, uses the Globalstar network. If you have slightly more room in your back pack (and you still won’t need much), the iSavi from Wideye is a satellite hotspot that delivers the Inmarsat ISatHub service, providing a higher data rate of up to 384kbps, much closer to that of 3G. With this powerful device you can connect multiple devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops and access data and voice services with ease. By the time the satellites were ready, cell phones had captured most of the market Globalstar and Iridium were targeting. Up-to-date pricing and reviews for Best Satellite Phones on the market can be found at the satellite phone models website.
Iridium Extreme is the first satellite phone to meet military standard of US DoD (810F) with high ingress protection rating (IP65) with Location Based Services (LBS) to be compliant with Satellite Emergency Notification Device (SEND) features, via programmable SOS button. Satellite phones operate over satellite networks, communicating via satellites that are either orbiting in a fixed location above the Equator (Inmarsat is an example of this geo-stationary (GEO) type of network), or in a low earth orbit (LEO) like the Iridium and Globalstar networks. In summary satellite phones and cell phones offer similar voice and data communications services, in different ways.
While leading satellite manufacturers like Iridium , Inmarsat , and Globalstar all offer a range of voice and data connectivity devices, there are important differences that enterprise buyers should consider. Thanks to this large number of satellites and mesh-style network design, Iridium provides the most comprehensive global satellite coverage on the market—calls are dropped less frequently and time spent waiting for a signal is minimized in most situations. Inmarsat , Iridium and Globalstar all offer different coverage which may be better in certain areas or for certain types of voice, text or data services.

Combined with the only communications network providing truly global coverage, the 9555 satellite phone delivers the reliable, secure, real-time, mission-critical communications service that Iridium users have come to expect.
Inmarsat phones cost more than Globalstar devices but less than Iridium phones and its service cost is on par with Iridium. Unlike cell phones, the most common satellite phones in North America (Globalstar and Iridium), have robust batteries that hold a charge for weeks and run a lot of talk time. The Iridium have the best coverage here in BC but they are a lot more expensive than the Globalstar phones at least until they get more satellites up.I am looking to get one as well i will be solo this year.
All the satellite phones available from Satcom Global are easy to use and offer different benefits for users such as large screens with trans-reflective display which are readable even in bright sunlight, high-visibility colour screens and larger keypads for easy dialling with gloves on. In addition, the intuitive cellular phone style user interfaces enable you to make calls quickly and send emergency information instantly. Major companies which provide Satellite cellular phone service are Globalstar Satellite phone, Thuraya Satellite Phone, At&t Satellite Phone, Inmarsat Satellite Phone, Iridium Satellite Phone. Globalstar: New LEO constellation (24 satellites), several gateways (coverage circles these gateways with 32 worldwide), two handset models and one GEN II hotspot (available today), clearest voice quality, cheap airtime & data plans.
Iridium: LEO constellation (being rebuilt now as we speak 40 new satellites with 66 total), international numbers, one gateway (single point of failure), true worldwide coverage, pricey airtime plans, very slow data, bulky rugged phones. Sat-Fi2 gives you the power of the Globalstar network through satellite Wi-Fi allowing you to access your emails, make phone calls and send text messages with your current smart device. Most satellite phones allow you to send text and email messages, not just voice calls, just as cell phones do. While you are shopping around for a phone, also be sure to check airtime plans to see how these messages are charged.
Iridium’s constellation of 66 satellites provides critical voice and data services for regions not served by other communication networks. Most emergency response organizations acquire handheld satellite phones primarily for backup voice communications, but other mobile services are increasingly in demand. Emergency response organizations in the US have many mobile satellite phone providers to choose from, including: Iridium, Globalstar, and the relatively new Inmarsat Global Satellite Phone Service (or GSPS).
Iridium offers voice and low-speed data services, and provides true global connectivity…even at the North and South poles—something that Inmarsat, globalstar and MSAT cannot advertise. Globalstar devices and services are also available, using Globalstar’s low earth orbit satellite network. Can connect up to 5 mobile devices providing satellite data, voice and text messaging services to anyone with a smartphone who happens to be off the grid and on the go!
Satellite phones are handheld (typically) communications devices allow you to communicate where cellular and landline networks are not availble. On the flip side, Iridium satellite phones tend to cost more than Inmarsat phones do. However, Iridium’s service plans are comparable to those of Inmarsat, and they’re actually less costly than those of Globalstar. Globalstar’s GSP-1600 satellite phone has been remanufactured to provide users with easy access to satellite voice and data services, which includes Internet, email access, voicemail, incoming short messages, and GPS position location.
At 9.6 kbps, Globalstar phones are four times as fast as phones on the Iridium and Inmarsat networks but are still very slow compared to smartphones or computers. Globalstar satellites do not communicate with each other, they merely relay satphone signals to and from ground ‘gateway stations’ to the public phone network. The two main hand-held satellite phones suitable to North American use – Globalstar and Iridium – work off low-earth-orbital (LEO) satellite networks.
For land-liners making calls to sat phones, Globalstar and Iridium networks have their own country codes. On the other end of the spectrum lie satellite phones, which are more expensive and fragile, with a less reliable signal than beacon-style devices, but offer far better communications. As I stated in the introduction to my last post (see below), the most common wilderness-capable emergency signaling devices are Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs), Satellite phones, and SPOT satellite text messengers.
Iridium satellite phones are issued with codes +881 6 and +881 7. Globalstar , although allocated +881 8 and +881 9 use U.S. telephone numbers except for service resellers located in Brazil , which use the +881 range. In general, it’s tough to make comparisons on satellite phones, such as Iridium vs Inmarsat, because each device offers different functions and features. Some have limited service areas, such as in specific countries or away from the poles, but in general, satellites provide better coverage than cell phone networks.
Regardless of the harsh environment, satphones can provide excellent voice, SMS and GPS services and reliability where other cellular phones might fail to operate or not have signal. As well as the key voice services provided by satellite phones, a modest data capability is available with most satellite handsets. They enable users to make and receive phone calls from remote locations, send and receive SMS (short message services) for brief notifications and updates to other handheld devices.
The big three providers of satellite phone service are Iridium, Globalstar, and Inmarsat. Phones offer true voice transmission much like a cell phone, but instead use a reliable satellite network so you can place and receive clear quality calls in just about any boating condition including fog. Unlike mobile phones, satellite phones don’t use land-based cell towers to send and receive signals, as the name suggests, they use satellites.
Global Handheld Satellite Phones for Iridium, Inmarsat, Thuraya, and Globalstar. This satellite phone gives you access to voice and SMS services so you can send and receive calls and short messages. Satellite phones make use of different services that allows you to send and receive calls and SMS.
Satellite phones — Devices that can transmit voice over satellite signal are more expensive and usually bulkier than what we tested here. In a host of head-to-head tests, we found that the Iridium networked devices are a little faster and more reliable than the GlobalStar devices, even with what should be equal overhead coverage. Further, the InReach Mini uses the global Iridium Network while all SPOT devices use the limited GlobalStar satellite system.
Like other personal communication devices, satellite phones can be used for any voice, text messaging or data application. The BlueCosmo Inmarsat IsatPhone 2.1 offers the ability to make and receive voice calls, SMS, track your position with GPS from anywhere on the globe (well, mostly, satellite coverage at the north and south poles is poor, outside of those areas people will get excellent coverage). Iridium satellite phones are currently the preferred handheld satellite phone solution for most emergency response organizations in the US. Though call drops occur and sometimes fairly often, the ability of Iridium satellite phones to consistently deliver results both globally and in any terrain has given Iridium the well-deserved reputation of industry leader in the field of handheld satellite phones.
Finally, unlike the other two satellite phone services, Globalstar charges for receiving inbound calls that are dialed directly to the Globalstar mobile number. Before 2007, most of Outfitter Satellite’s emergency response customers used Globalstar or Iridium satellite phones. The Iridium 9555 and Globalstar GSP-1700 satellite phones do not have advanced GPS tracking features.
Legado Networks is the company that operates the MSAT network using their two MSAT satellites to offer voice, push-to-talk, and low-speed data services in North America only. The Globalstar network uses 24 LEO satellites—far fewer than Iridium, but they orbit nearly twice as high to make up for it (the higher the orbit, the less satellites needed to cover the Earth’s surface at any given time). Some of these function as 28k satellite modems and some integrate with current smartphones to provide data and voice coverage when your cell coverage is negligible to non-existent.
At Walco Radio, we carry the GSP-1700 Globalstar phone Small but durable, Globalstar phones provide location services in conjunction with voice. If you spend time areas without reliable landline or cellular coverage, or are concerned with having a backup to these systems, satellite phones enable you to communicate best where and when other forms of communications won’t. Whereas satellite phones from Iridium and Globalstar can maintain a signal even while traveling in a car, train or plane.
Iridium satellite offers phones, packages and data services for avid campers, hikers, hunters or any occupation that takes you off to a remote, off-the-grid location for a while. The satellites used by the Globalstar and Iridium systems are in low-earth orbit (up to about 930 miles) to allow users to carry small phones instead of the cumbersome models that some reporters still carry. The Globalstar GSP-1700 , the brand’s first and only phone, is a fine product with 4 hours of talk time, fast data speeds for quick transmission of texts and coordinates, and voice quality on par with (if not better than) Iridium.
Whichever satellite phone appeals to your pocket and your specific need, if you’re planning on visiting a remote area with minimal or no cell coverage, or you need an emergency backup communications device, then a satellite phone can prove to be extremely useful, if not lifesaving. At only 780 kilometers from the Earth, the proximity of Iridium’s LEO network means pole-to-pole coverage, a shorter transmission path, stronger signals, lower latency, and shorter registration time than with GEO satellites. Powered by a uniquely sophisticated global constellation of 66 cross-linked Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, the Iridium® network provides high-quality voice and data connections over the planet’s entire surface, including across airways, oceans, and polar regions.
Iridium, Inmarsat, Thuraya and Globalstar are the key players in the global satellite communications industry and their satellites all work differently. A cell phone needs to connect to physical cellular towers to make calls, send texts or access internet services on mobile data. You also won’t have any trouble finding the right service solution for your satellite internet needs, whether for land or maritime use, with many options, including Inmarsat’s BGAN, Global Xpress, FleetBroadband, & Fleet One broadband services, as well as Iridium’s OpenPort and Certus satellite internet services.
You can explore our great prepaid and monthly service plans, from the top providers in satellite telecommunications, like Iridium, Inmarsat, and Globalstar. Iridium Extreme® satellite phone is built with the same reliable voice and data capability that users have come to trust from the only real mobile, real global satellite communications company in the world. Creates the first ever reliable global connection for voice and data communications on your smartphone and up to 5 mobile devices.
Most satellite phones are meant primarily for emergency voice calls, so they offer pretty middling data speeds. If you live, work, or travel exclusively in areas with Globalstar coverage, this is the service to choose unless you need missing features offered by Iridium or Inmarsat. Iridium phones do cost more and the service plans run roughly the same as Inmarsat — but less than Globalstar. Be sure to visit satellite phone models for the best Best Satellite Phones on the market to buy.
Each Iridium satellite covers less area than a Globalstar satellite, but the denser network serves the entire globe, poles and oceans included (with varying talk-time windows). The situation is being corrected, but at this time we don’t recommend Globalstar phones for dire emergency use unless you’ve rented and tested the system for your needs.
